Study in Canada Requirements for Indian Students 2026

July 11, 2026 By Shubham Saini 7 min read Countries Guide, Study Abroad
Eligibility to study in Canada for Indian Students

Canada is still a top pick for Indian students. It has good universities. It offers a path to work after graduation. It already has a large Indian student community. But the rules have changed a lot in the last two years. If you plan to go in 2026, you need fresh facts. Not old advice from a friend who went in 2022.

This guide covers what you truly need. Documents, money, English scores, and the visa steps. It also flags the mistakes that cause most rejections.

The Big Change: SDS Is Gone

For years, most Indian students used the Student Direct Stream, or SDS. It was fast. It needed fewer papers. That stream closed on November 8, 2024.

Every Indian student now applies through the Regular Stream. This stream needs more paperwork. You must show four months of bank statements now. Not just one GIC receipt. It also takes longer. Usually eight to twelve weeks from India.

So if any agent tells you SDS still works, walk away. That advice is old. It could hurt your application.

Core Requirements at a Glance

Here is a quick list. This is what every Indian student needs for a study permit in 2026.

Requirement Details
Letter of Acceptance From a school on the official DLI list
Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) Needed for most Bachelor’s and diploma students. Not needed for most Master’s and PhD students at public schools
Proof of funds GIC of CAD 22,895, plus proof your first year tuition is paid
Bank statement history Four months of statements, since SDS is closed
English test score IELTS 6.0 overall is common, but it depends on your school
Valid passport Must stay valid for six months past your planned stay
Statement of Purpose Also called a Letter of Explanation. It explains your course choice and your plan to return home
Medical exam Needed for most students, based on your course length and country
Biometrics Fingerprints and a photo, given at a visa centre
Police clearance May be asked for, mostly for longer courses

Note that fees and exact numbers can change. Always check the latest figures on the official IRCC website before you apply.

Understanding the GIC Requirement

The GIC, or Guaranteed Investment Certificate, is the part that confuses most families. It is not a fee. It is your own money. It sits in a Canadian bank account. You get it back each month once you land.

From September 2025, the required GIC amount is CAD 22,895. That is close to INR 15 lakh. The exact rupee value shifts with the exchange rate. This is higher than the older amount of CAD 20,635.

Here is how it works in real life:

  • You open a GIC account with a Canadian bank while still in India
  • You transfer the full amount before you apply or attend your interview
  • Once you land in Canada, you get a first lump sum for rent and basic needs
  • The rest comes in equal monthly payments through the year
  • The final payment adds a bit of interest, often around one to one and a half percent

A GIC is not the only way. You can also show bank statements, fixed deposits, or sponsor income. But most visa officers trust the GIC the most. If your budget allows it, this route often improves your chances.

The Provincial Attestation Letter, Explained Simply

The PAL started in 2024. It is part of Canada’s plan to limit the number of new students each year. Think of it as a permission slip from the province. It confirms your seat counts within that province’s yearly quota.

Most Bachelor’s and diploma students need one. Most Master’s and PhD students at public universities do not. If you join a program split across two schools or two provinces, you now need only one PAL. This rule changed in February 2026.

Here is the catch. Each province has a limited number of PALs. Once a province runs out, no more PALs go out until the next cycle starts. So students who apply early, and to more than one province, tend to do better than those who wait or apply to only one busy province like Ontario.

English Language Requirements

IRCC does not set one fixed English score for a study permit. Your university or college sets that bar. IRCC expects you to meet whatever your school asks for.

That said, most schools ask for an IELTS score near 6.0 overall, with no band below 5.5. Some tough programs want a higher score, mostly at the Master’s level. PTE and TOEFL scores work at many schools too. A growing number now also take the Duolingo English Test. Always check your own program’s page. Don’t assume one number fits every course.

Study Permit Caps and What They Mean for You

Canada placed a cap on new study permits starting in 2024. It cut the total by about a third from the year before. For 2026, IRCC set a target of around 408,000 study permits. This number covers both new students and permit renewals. Only about 155,000 of that total is set aside for brand new applicants.

What does this mean for you? Competition is real, and it’s not spread evenly. Busy provinces and busy colleges fill their share fast. Smaller provinces like Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia often keep PALs open longer, simply because fewer students apply there first.

Why Applications Get Rejected

Most rejections come from a small set of repeat mistakes. Knowing them early can save you months of delay.

  • Weak ties to India. Officers want proof that you plan to return home. Family, property, and career plans in India all help your case.
  • Sudden, unexplained deposits. A large sum showing up right before you apply looks suspicious. Keep your bank balance steady for at least six months.
  • Generic Statements of Purpose. An SOP that could belong to any student, for any country, often gets flagged. Be clear about your course, your school, and your career goal.
  • A poor academic match. If your past degree has no link to your new course, explain that gap clearly in your SOP.
  • A missing or expired PAL. Applying without a valid PAL, when you need one, almost always leads to a refusal.
  • A GIC below the suggested amount. Some students apply with the bare minimum. Officers often read this as weak planning, not readiness.

Life After the Study Permit

Once you land in Canada, a few rules matter day to day. You can work up to 24 hours a week during term. You can work full time during breaks. If you want a Post Graduation Work Permit later, your English level must hit CLB 7 for a university degree or CLB 5 for a college diploma. If you pick a diploma over a degree, check that your course sits on the approved PGWP list first. Not every diploma qualifies now.

One more rule to note. Since November 2024, you cannot switch schools on the same study permit. If you want to change schools after you arrive, you must apply for a fresh permit. So pick your college with care. Switching later is no longer quick or simple.

Final Thoughts

Studying in Canada still works well for Indian students. But it now takes more planning than before. SDS is gone. Funding rules have gone up. The PAL system adds a new step most students haven’t seen before. The good news is that none of this is a surprise. Every rule here is known well ahead of time.

Start early. Aim for eight to ten months of lead time before your intake. Sort your GIC and bank statements well in advance. Write an SOP that is honest and true to your own story. Apply to more than one province if you can. That way, a PAL shortage in one place won’t wreck your whole plan. Canada’s door is still open. You just need to walk in prepared.
